Harrison Mandell had come to the Arizona outpost of Yuma, on the bug infested banks of the Colorado, to find out who was stealing money from an upriver mining company called Mina del Agua Mala. But from the moment a saloon girl came running naked into the dusty street, and a love-crazed Indian was driven off with a shotgun, Mandell knew this wasn't going to be an ordinary case. Between him and the mine was a hard, muddy stretch of the swirling Colorado and a boat ride on the leaky Bad Water. On board was a motley collection of misfits, hard cases, whores, and pretenders. Throw in a barrel of gold, a killer on the run, and some missing postal orders, and the Bad Water would quickly become a place of death...

Colorado Gold edition by Douglas Hirt Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book started out very slowly but gradually got my attention until I finished it in one sitting. There are lots of twists and turns in this very enjoyable read. I received a free advance copy of this book in return for an honest review.
I received an advanced copy of Colorado Gold in return for an honest review. I really enjoyed this western and the characters in it. I would recommend this novel to all lovers of westerns. This author's writings are up there with J.A. Johnstone.
I give this book 5 stars. I really liked the story and the characters. I received an advanced free copy of the book and agreed to give a fair review. There is something here for everyone. Good story, characters are well developed and it is well written.
This book was a bit of a slow starter and developed too slowly for me. However, the story line was different enough, the setting was unique and just when I thought I would quit the book there would be a nugget to keep me interested. Not the greatest one I've read but entertaining enough.
The book is well written and an excellent read. I injoyed the book and recomemend it to you. Reading this book Will also give you a history lesson about life on the Colorido river during this périodes. I was furnished an advanced copy of the book in return for an honest review which I now subit.
A free copy of of this novel was sent to to review and I'm glad it was sent to me. It is a thoroughly enjoyable story that draws you in right at the beginning and keeps you interested right to the somewhat surprising ending. The sprinkled lots of clues throughput the narrative that I didn't pick up until I went back and found them. This is a good we'll written western. Enjoy.
I listened to the audio version of this book, and the narration is excellent. While Douglas Hirt has written all across the western genre, his niche seems to be settings involving rivers of the frontier and wild west, and life around riverboats and keel boats. A Pinkerton man goes undercover to investigate a theft and finds himself in the unbearable heat, humidity, and mosquitoes of Yuma, Arizona territory. The story has an extended first act, covering nearly half the book, taking its time to introduce a variety of colorful western characters. There are several nefarious conspiracies at work, and the detective's actual case becomes almost an afterthought. Most of the actual action is saved for the third act, which can be frustrating if you are expecting a shoot 'em up-style western. The most interesting action/discovery in the book is accidental and tangential to the main plot. While the various mysteries are carefully plotted, and the characters are vibrant, it's never clear what the primary action of the novel is about. The Pinkerton man is working on several puzzles at once but isn't personally involved in the outcome. The details about riverboat travel on the Colorado River felt authentic enough, but the story itself, like the boat, runs aground and hits snags a few times too often.
Pleasant entertainment.
