Isolated and ill-treated by her father, Keeley Allanson knows she must leave her home in Melrose, Scotland, if she is to keep her spirit from breaking. She makes her plans, only to find Fate suddenly robbing her of any say she has in her future. Her existence becomes entwined with that of Kirthgarran, a proud but money-starved estate in the Highlands still struggling to survive the aftermath of the Jacobite rising forty years before. It will take all of Keeley’s courage to confront the mixed emotions that the Fergussons of Kirthgarran bear toward her and to create a new destiny. Love will come from an unexpected direction, but it will be threatened by a multitude of secrets, ongoing acts of revenge, and more than one unsolved murder. With her own life in danger she will be forced to decide how much she can forgive those who have wronged her, and just who amongst them--including the man who holds her heart--she will be able to trust.

I do not do reviews very often. I find it very difficult to give out 5 stars. When I do, I try to do it on the basis of the category . For example, I would give Schindlers List 5 stars for non fiction.I, however gave this book 5 stars for a historical romance. I really enjoyed this book. The story had its twists and turns, a little romance and the history was there. Although fiction it was accurate in ways that so many are not. Even the language was there so you could immerse yourself into the era.Would love you to do more historical fiction

The Blackbird of Kirthgarran Susan Brown 9780615530420 Books Reviews
Susan Brown has written a masterpiece. Her skillfully crafted plot line, with its twists and turns, alternately left me breathless, tearful, worried, relieved, and joyful. The characters are well-drawn and multidimensional, beautifully sculpted from the heather-crowned rock from which they've sprung. But over and above the intricately devised story line and unforgettable characters, somehow the author has managed to capture the heartbeat of eighteenth century Scotland, turning it into a living, breathing character in its own right. This is a remarkable first novel, and I hope this is but the first of many books Susan Brown writes. I can't wait for the next one!
This story is very well written and suspenseful! I know it sounds like a cliche, but I couldn't put it down. I felt like I was in Scotland with the detail, and the glossary at the end was a nice touch for some of the old Scottish and Gaelic words.
I loved this book everything I like in a book ,thank you
Truly loved this novel. It takes you right in! You love the main character, you are angry at the main character. You love her husband, hate him, and love him again. It is a true story of how life really could be back in that time. By the end of the book you will want her to keep going!!!!
Well constructed, I still would categorize this book as literary fiction. This book is tedious to read as it begins with things of interest to a young woman, cooking recipes household hints for repairing clothing etc. I find this Scottish lyric interesting only in the sense that it gives an insightful information on the culture and period for which it was written. It is written as a memoir with the young woman reflecting on her Scottish upbringing. Frankly I wasn't sure if she was competent to judge her upbringing. I believe it was becoming increasingly clear that her father and/or her older brother had sexually exploited this young storyteller. As I don't find reading this type of trauma entertainment. I confess I have not finished this book nor do I ever intend to.
This book has great sadness and great joy. I wished many times that I could hear the poetry and songs that were quoted....perhaps in the audio version?
Really enjoyed this book. The author spent a lot of time on the characters and I really had no idea who the villain was in this book. I would have given the book 5 stars but towards the end of the book it really went on and on like the author did not know how to end the story.
