Ricardian fiction readers and history fans alike will find this graphic novel a both historically accurate and emotionally stirring read.
Richard III's background story is not linearly related as far as the succession of events in time is concerned. The action starts on the day before the battle of Bosworth when Richard hears mass in the Church at Sutton Cheeney and remembers his youth and later events of his life in a series of flashbacks while he is making ready for the battle. The guiding thread is the sense of loss and despair he has been left with since the recent loss of his "most dearly beloved consort" Anne Neville, the young cousin he had met and fallen in love with during his tutelage at her father Warwick's estate in Middleham.
The flashbacks device will probably make it initially difficult for the reader with little prior knowledge of the War of the Roses period to follow, but it helps create a very tense and emotional atmosphere that will grip you from the start to the end of this beautifully drawn and told graphic novel. Quite a change in an ever expanding range of Ricardian fiction and one you will want to keep on your bedside table to go back to from time to time.
